Deconstructed Instant Pot "Stuffed" Cabbage

I don't know why I love stuffed cabbage so much. The little cabbage burritos used to have hidden toothpicks to keep the cabbage from sliding off the hamburger packets. The cabbage leaves are cooked separately. Right there that is a lot of work, but I love the texture of hamburger and rice in a soft blanket of cabbage topped with lots of silky tomato sauce. I also like it because like liver and onions, I do not make it so I appreciate it more.

This Instant Pot recipe has all the feels without the work.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. hamburger
  • 1 c. chopped onion
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 2 glugs Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 8oz. cans tomato sauce
  • 1/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. vinegar
  • 1/2 c beef broth
  • 1 c. cooked rice
  • 1 small head cabbage, quartered, cored, sliced
  • 1 can tomato soup w/water if condensed

Directions:

  1. Put IP on saute, add a little oil spray and sauté hamburger. Add onions, garlic, salt, pepper and bay leaf.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar and beef broth. Add into IP and put IP on manual for 15 minutes, quick release.
  3. After the steam is released, add in the cooked rice and cut cabbage. Pour the tomato soup over it and manual for 5 minutes. Quick release.
