It's Not Just About The Food

Netflix, my favorite food channel, is streaming the first season of Chef David Chang's Ugly Delicious. It is not a travel and explore cultures via food show like Bourdain's (any of his). Instead this is closer to Huang's World with a little less humor and a little more philosophical conversations around food: authenticity, immigrant culture, identity, assimilation, transformation, values.

I say philosophical conversations only because it's David Chang. Similar to his now defunct Lucky Peach magazine, the style of Chef Chang is to just blurt out what he believes is correct on whatever subject he is tackling and then through talking to other chefs, eating and more talking, he starts backing down on his original statement and starts shifting his lens until he comes to some kind of new understanding. Nothing is sacred, including the food which makes this an interesting distraction.
